Tungsten Carbide Introduciton

Tungsten carbide is a chemical compound that is made by powder metallurgy. Fine tungsten carbide powder and a metal binder (commonly cobalt, Co) are mixed together and then sintered at a high temperature. Tungsten carbide has extraordinary hardness that is second only to diamond; it has a Mohs hardness of around 8.5 to 9.5. In addition, this hardness is retained to temperatures of 1000°C. It also has excellent wear resistance properties; tungsten carbide has an abrasion resistance rating many times greater than that of steel. As the base material for PCD blanks and PDC cutter it is also used to make various cutting tools, wear-resistant parts and mining tools. Tungsten carbide is not very tough. Since it is brittle, it can be chipped or cracked by sudden impact or shock loading. It also can be difficult to machine. The fiber laser cutting machines manufactured by TKD CO., LTD. can effectively resolve these challenges.

How to Cut Tungsten Carbide

Lasers have now been incorporated into the cutting process. TKD CO., LTD was one of the first companies in China to use laser technology on ultra-hard material such as tungsten carbide and diamond. The TKD-300F laser cutting machine utilizes fiber laser source together with a galvanometer scanning system to achieve fast, repeatable and precise machining on ultra hard material allowing you to thin, cut and mark. The TKD-300F enables you to cut materials with a laser, meaning there is no contact during the cutting process. The edges of the material will be extremely smooth, leaving you with little to no heat affected area. The laser optics are used to focus the laser beam down to a small spot to achieve a high-power density at the focal point. When this focused beam of light hits the material, it will rapidly increase in temperature until it reaches its vaporization temperature. The laser then travels in a linear motion relative to the material producing a small kerf. Because of the precision of the cutting process, you will find that there is very little waste left over when cutting your materials. Since the slag created from cutting melts away from the tungsten carbide you can wash it away with water, which will not harm your material. This allows the cutting process to be efficient.

TKD-300F advantage:

Processing tungsten carbide with the TKD-300F allows you to finish large orders in a very short period of time. Cutting with a fiber laser will allow you to achieve superior quality while using less energy. The Fiber Laser cutting system can be used on many different types of material and is flexible enough to cut just about any job your business needs. In addition, there is virtually no waste produced when using the TKD-300F cutting machine, saving you money.

TKD Tungsten Carbide Laser Cutting Machine FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can TKD fiber laser machines cut tungsten carbide?
Yes. TKD fiber laser cutting machines are designed for processing ultra-hard materials including tungsten carbide. The non-contact laser process can produce narrow kerfs and precise cuts while reducing mechanical stress on brittle tungsten carbide workpieces.
2. What are the advantages of laser cutting tungsten carbide compared with conventional machining?
Laser cutting is a non-contact process, so it avoids direct tool wear and mechanical cutting forces. TKD's system is designed for efficient and repeatable processing, with a narrow kerf, low material waste and a small heat-affected area when suitable process parameters are used.
3. What tungsten carbide thickness can TKD laser cutting machines process?
The available thickness depends on the material grade, geometry and selected machine model. On the TKD product page, the listed maximum thickness is up to 3 mm for a single-side pass and up to 5 mm for the TKD-300F, while double-sided processing is listed up to 4 mm and 9 mm respectively. Final capability should be confirmed through a sample test for the customer's specific material.
4. Does laser cutting tungsten carbide cause a large heat-affected zone?
TKD's published specifications list a heat-affected range of ≤0.05 mm and a kerf width of ≤0.1 mm for the referenced system. Actual results depend on laser parameters, material composition, thickness, cutting path and processing strategy, so sample testing is recommended for demanding applications.
5. What materials can TKD laser cutting machines process besides tungsten carbide?
TKD develops laser processing equipment for a range of superhard and difficult-to-machine materials, including PCD, PDC, CVD diamond, CBN/PCBN, tungsten carbide and selected ceramic materials. Applications include precision cutting, drilling, chamfering, profiling and marking, depending on the machine configuration and material.
6. What does TKD CO., LTD specialize in?
TKD CO., LTD specializes in laser processing equipment and manufacturing solutions for superhard materials, including PCD, PDC, PCBN, CBN, CVD diamond, tungsten carbide and selected ceramic materials. TKD focuses on precision laser cutting and related processing solutions for tool manufacturers and industrial users, helping customers improve cutting efficiency, dimensional consistency and material utilization.
